The Standard and Poor’s 500ðŸūMeow Motto

Happy morning,

We made it to FriYAY. The market had the blues on its first 2025 trading day and closed red. Don’t panicâ€Ķit’s taking a little breather.

Stocks rallied last year with the market ending the year up about 23%, matching 2023’s gain. It’s only the fourth time in the past century that the index has notched 20%+ returns for two years straight.

  • The U.S. House of Representatives may again struggle to pick a speaker, and a protracted election process wouldn’t be well for market-moving matters(like taxes or anything else) that Congress must address later this year.

  • Tesla - 6.08% reported fourth-quarter deliveries yesterday, posting a respectable 495,570 vehicles sold—a quarterly record. It dropped 6.08% because that number of deliveries still missed Wall Street estimates by some 10,000 units.

The stock is rebounding in Friday pre-market☀ïļ, helped by a big target price boost from a Wall Street analyst.

  • Boeing BA-2.90% outlined the many steps it has implemented in recent months to address its manufacturing crisis and push to improve safety and quality in manufacturing to prevent any future accidents.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has, for now, limited the number of 737 MAX aircraft Boeing can make in a month to 38.

The Standard And Poor’s 500

The Standard and Poor’s 500 Index(also known as SPX and S&P 500, not to be confused with SPY - more on that later)features 500 major publicly traded US companies. The S&P is a float-weighted index. The market capitalizations of the companies in the index are adjusted by the number of shares available for public trading.

The S&P 500 Index was launched in 1957 by the credit rating agency Standard and Poor's.

You can't invest directly in the S&P 500 because it's an index but you can invest in one of the many funds that use it as a benchmark and mimic it(think SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, also known as SPY).

The S&P 500 is considered one of the best measures of large US stocks and even the entire equities market because of its depth and diversity.
