What a hectic first month of the year. We promised you a rollercoaster ride, well you got one…At least the stock market is resilient or you could say made to weather the constent fluctuations.
The “January effect” is in full swing.
There is a lot more from this bumpy ride to come with Trump still preaching tariffs near and far(25% on Canada/Mexico from Feb 1,also China tariffs will be expanded by 10%, he says).
Hopefully it’s just a whole lot of barking to scare those involved into agreement(ahem… Columbia) and the outcome would be tariffs that are not that extreme. The market would face potential losses though, if Trump’s threats become status quo.
Economic theory and previous situations point that tariffs are self-defeating.
The first FOMC meeting was also shrouded in uncertainty. The Federal Reserve is changing course after just a few months of interest-rate reductions.
The labor market is doing alright, but inflation remains a problem, so interest rates were untouched. Not even Fed Chair Jerome Powell knows how long that pause button will stay pressed on!
